What is Interculturalism? What do you think it refers to?

According to UNESCO:

Source: Museum 2.0

How do you balance the value of honoring specific multicultural practices and bridging them to build new connections?

At the Inclusive Museum conference this summer, Dr. Rick West introduced this question. Nina Simon explains that this was the first time she ha'd heard the term intercultural. She found this helpful set of definitions and diagrams:
  • In multicultural communities, we live alongside each other.
  • In cross-cultural communities, there is some reaching across boundaries.
  • In intercultural communities, there is comprehensive mutuality, reciprocity, and equality.

  1. Hi, Miss Sturla.

Thank you for the post. It's a pity that the link to Nina Simon's post is down, but leaving that aside, it was really entertaining to read.

I realized that I never knew how to give proper feedback, haha!
Well, now that I learned how to do it, I think the Original Posters of the forums I frequent will be happier to read me.

I'll also show this post to some teacher friends that i have, because I think that is really necessary to know how to give a proper comment, even more now that our voices an opinions are visible to everyone on internet.

Once again, thank you and I'm looking forward to next posts. See ya!

I like reading blogs but i never heard of a topic like this. Both videos about interculturalism and it´s variants are amazing!
I agree with the definition and makes me think about the idea that people have to know about this. We live in a reality that constantly involves racism, xenophobia, and also discrimination about language, religions. I think as a teachers we have to fix it through teaching students how to be more open-minded. They are the future and have the responsability to live in a world full of differences and that they respect each other. Although they might be the people that could change the future, we also have the responsability to increase our knowledge and being concious about culture, faith, and other important stuff. We do not have to stay out of situations, instead, we have to study the present to help people improve the world.
To conclude, i would like to say that the videos taught me that i have to learn more about people differences to give my future students a good classes.

  40. Hi Sandra,

Thanks for the illustrative welcome of the last week! Very excited to take this class.

Regarding the question of the task, I found the first video very interesting and informative. Interculturalism is not only when culture, language, ethnicity and faith convey together but also the mutual respect between people.

I totally agree with the statement of the video that outlined the relevance of the political leadership's role in promoting the dialogue and understanding. For instance, I was talking with a colleague the other day about the zero diversity of ethnicity in media and entertainment programmes of Argentina.

The importance of a good intercultural dialogue in building respect between people and overcoming racism, intolerance and discrimination among them, it’s essential for the diversity of a society.

I think that every human being deserves dignity and equality since we are born, no matter our country, religion, skin or whatever that makes us different each other, we are all equal, and we all deserve respect and rights,
My rights end where the others begin, that means that you use your rights without limiting the rights of others. Your freedom ends where mine begins.

  43. Hi Sandra!

I just finished watching all the videos about interculturalism and I have to say I have learned a lot.

I remember hearing the term before, but I have never studied it in depth as the topic wasn't properly presented to me, at least not in the way it should be introduced to us as a society.

After learning about the meaning, and what it entails, I believe interculturalism is something we must take into consideration whenever we talk about diversity and equality. No one talks about interculturalism, and it's the reason why some of us didn't know anything about it until now. It shouldn't be something to learn just for an assignment, it must be something we should establish in our everyday lives.

I find this matter very interesting, so I hope we can keep on learning about this throughout the year.

I think that is a duty of all societies to accept and live respecting everyone, leaving behind all kind of discrimination or differencies. I belive that if each one of us put our grain of sand, someday we could reach that goal.

Last year I had "estudios interculturales" at my secondary school. I loved the subject because of everything we talk about and because it was in english. 48. Hello teacher.
I have to say that, after this introduction to the subject, it seems very interesting and important!
I enjoyed reading about interculturalism, multiculturalism and cross-culturalism. It is a topic that I did not know before reading this post. Although I got lost in some parts of the video, mostly because of my not so advanced English skills, it is worth mentioning that I could understand that interculturalism is something really important for us as a society, and a must as an objective.
Reflexing about the topic, I remembered a personal experience. Some years ago I went to catholic high school. Next to it, there was another high school, but it was only for jewish people. In the whole year that I spent there, I never got to see or know much about the school next to mine! There was a guard in the door of that school and high walls that covered all the building. Besides, the students were never anywhere to be seen, there was a lot of security and secretism. Although I understand that this situation was produced because of security reasons (since we live in a society where, pitifully, antisemitism still exists), I think that it works as an example of a multicultural community. My previous high school had organised a lot of events with other schools of the zone, all of them catholic, but we never got to meet our own neighbours. A multicultural community is one where we live alongside each other, without reaching across boundaries, exactly as the situation with my catholic ex high school and the jewish high school next to it.
Moving forwards, we can also say that if we had lived in an intercultural community, that necessity of protection towards the students of that high school, just for being jewish, would not have existed. Therefore, we can say that the benefits of an intercultural community are vital for us as citizens. I would not have liked to be in those students’ shoes, being scared because of my religion.
In addition, I think it goes without saying that we, as future teachers, need to be conscious of these different cultures and how to act with it in our classroom. Learning how to deal with discriminatory acts or prejudices is essential for us as humans, but it is even more important for a teacher who might have in his or her hands an important and harmful situation as this one.
It stands out in sight that the topic of the post is great to work in class, I look forward to reading my peers’ opinions.
    See you, teacher!

  61. Hi teacher! After reading the blog and watching the videos, I have a few things I would like to share.

This is my first time hearing about interculturalism, and I found it very informative, I'm glad you chose to teach us about this! To me, it's not a common thing to talk about yet, even though it should be, since we have the resources and technology to spread this type of knowledge.

Now that I know more about this, I think that interculturalism is something essential for us as a society, because getting to know other cultures and embracing them enriches ours, and at the same time, interacting with people from different backgrounds and with different beliefs, helps us to be respectful to them, and creates a space for equality, something that everyone deserves no matter what country, religion, or gender they are.

In conclusion, I really liked this topic, and it would be great if we talked more about this in our daily lives, so that we can apply it and grow as an individual human and as a society.

I think it's very important to know about this topic because nowadays there are still differences and discrimination among people of different cultures and I think it’s necessary to promote respect between people.
Personally, I didn’t know the exact concept and the difference between interculturalism and multiculturalism.
To sum up the subject, I’d like to say that multiculturalism is about people coexisting together but it doesn’t imply interaction between them.
Interculturalism, instead, implies interaction with other people, respecting the differences between culture, faith, identity, language, etc. Interculturalism is about promoting and exchanging different cultural values in order to accept each other to live in a better society.

I think all of us as citizens should have a look at our community, and make sure we are being an active part of policies such as interculturalism. It is not a bad idea to check if we are giving space for it and encouraging our environment to deeply adopt it, having a really open and positive attitude towards diversity.
One of the many compelling topics shared in the video for me, was the idea of 'Identity' as a changing concept, which can vary through time. Therefor, our identity based on our culture is constantly changing, and so does our culture.
As I said before, I think this was very interesting and I'm surely sharing this information with the people around me.
    See you in class!

  71. Hi Teacher.

After reading the interculturalism's post and analysing what it had to offer I do believe that the culture of everything is important and unique in their own way, and it's amazing how thanks to it not only we can share ours with new people, but also to learn about others as a way of understanding their ideas and traditions.

And also it's great to realize that the co-existence of different cultures is possible in the present way.

    Hi miss!
This is my comment about the two videos about interculturalism.
I think that is interesting to know why they are called like that or the place where are located.
It was the first time of heard that definition of interculturalism and I wish that our country could have this, live with people from other countries sharing their cultures, ideas, and ways of living without no reject him.

  74. Hello miss!
Here are my answers about interculturalism:
Interculturalism is about making a place for everyone in society. For everybody to be accepted and included, regarding their culture. Its purpose is to end any type of segregation and start accepting and respecting cultures and their languages. Of course, foreigners need to know the host community´s language in order to be understood and to understand people in their surroundings.
The difference between multiculturalism and interculturalism is that, while in the first one various cultures can coexist together, they may not connect or communicate, but in the second one they interact with each other, creating bonds and relationships.

  76. Personally, I didn’t know the difference between interculturalism and multiculturalism so I will share the principal features about these concepts. Multiculturalism is about people coexisting together but it doesn’t imply interaction between them. Interculturalism, instead, implies interaction with other people, respecting the differences between culture, faith, identity, language, etc. Interculturalism is about promoting and exchanging different cultural values in order to accept each other to live in a better society.
Now, in the end, I think that interculturalism is important for us as a society, because getting to know other cultures and embracing them enriches ours, and at the same time, interacting with people from different backgrounds and with different beliefs, helps us to be respectful to them, and creates a space for equality, something that everyone deserves no matter what country, religion, or gender they are.

I understand that Interculturalism refers to the presence of different cultures and the exchange between them of their cultural values.
I think is very important as it contributes to a better understanding between people, both videos showed me how important it is to know a little more about the diversity of cultures that surround us, to create an atmosphere of harmony

  79. Greetings Sandra and classmates
As far as I’m concerned, socialising and living among people from other nationalities and traditions are part of the human being. Therefore, we can emphasise that cultural diversity is a feasible process owing to ourselves and our capacity to transmit our inner voice. Even I dare say it is one of our most precious characteristics. After all, I barely see myself living in a world without interacting with those who harbour around me. We socialise from the beginning, and this action persists until death.
Along with it, This blog provides an enthralling and brief comparison between “Interculturalism” and “Multiculturalism” whose concepts are taken lightly or not properly introduced in depth.
When it comes to “Multiculturalism”, it’s defined as the presence of different cultures in a determined territory. In contrast, “Interculturalism” refers to the coexistence and building of bonds of cultures. Furthermore, interaction prevails and, as a result, accepts the assimilation of traditions or norms of foreign cultures to one’s own.
By and large, the lesson I learned is that the focus on the whole is a valuable key to achieving a better dialogue and development of humanity.

  80. Hello teacher & everyone.
I find this interesting and I love the definition about interculturilism, a community with the same rights for everyone. Equality, with different types of cultures. We need a interculturilism society who interact each other no matter the differences between genders, languages & culture. We can see the diversity in our society but we need to work more harder for a interculturilism society because there are so many people who don't feel "comfortable" with people who come from another country.

  82. Hi miss Sandra
I really appreciate the video with this information, it is very clear about this topic.
Interculturalism is a way to mix people with different culture faith and identity and remove discrimination
It has a positive impact on people's lives, for example normalizing differences, promoting understanding and dialogue, reducing any fear, supporting immigrants, etc.
After this information, we might ask ourselves what is my attitude about it? I support non discrimination and equality or disallow it.
Sorry for the delay, see you soon!

  85. Hello teacher!
I think this post was really interesting. I learned about concepts that I didn't know that existed. I do believe is important to
    promote respect among different cultures
First, I think it's important to promote respect among different cultures. We tend to think that only our practices and our traditions are the valid ones, but that's incorrect. It may be hard but we need to open our minds and be able to understand that other countries have other habits and other practices. Also I think that we should be more interested in interculturalism because, as teachers of a foreign language, we are getting in contact with other culture that is different from ours so it's necessary to comprehend it in order to also
understand the language. I mean, there's expressions that may have no sense
for us but for them it does. On the other hand, I think that if someone's not interested in interculturalism
and/or the fact of communicating or interacting with people from other culture, at least they should understand multiculturalism and accept that there are multiple cultures in the world and it's okay if you don't want to get related to them but you do have to recognize and accept them.

  87. Hi miss sorry for the delay, I´m Facundo Recalde and here is my comment:
After reading the post I learnt about the definitions of multicultural communities, cross-cultural communities and intercultural communities. I found them really interesting, and from my point of view the funniest way to have an intercultural exchange is doing some sports with people from another country or culture. As an example I can say that I enjoyed playing football with Brazilians and Uruguayan people, learned about them and their culture, and I think that they also learned something about me and the Argentinian culture.

  88. Hello Sandra! Before watching the videos I didn't know about the multiculturalism and cross-culturalism. Now I understand the meaning and I think that interculturalism is very important because the interaction makes a society intercultural. The communication between one culture and another is essential because we can learn a lot of other cultures, respecting their identity, their faith, their language...
For instance; last year, I travelled to Italy and I knew people that live there and also, I spoke with people who were from Romania. I learnt a lot from them because we talked italian and we learnt from each other. I loved so much knowing about their culture!

  89. Hello teacher, everybody.
Interesting post and videos, to think about the differences within our own culture or the ones living together around the world. By standing all behind a common goal and respecting each others differences, it is possible to live in harmony and keep working together in defence of human rights, democracy, gender equality and non-discrimination.

  90. Hi everybody!

This is important information because we can identify what kind of culture we live in or are familiar with. I must say that I did not know the names that identify the different types of culture there are.

And it is important to reflect on what we do as citizens to include other cultures, for example, the video shows different options of activities that we can apply to include them. If we are already putting it into practice, that's great, and if we are not, we need to put it into practice.
